Last year, Dell did a rename of their popular laptop lines, getting rid of the naming scheme they had used for decades before and introduced an Apple-esque Pro, Plus, Premium, Max confusing naming scheme. We weren’t fans of the naming scheme, nor was most of the industry as it made it really confusing to figure out which devices were what. You had no idea why you’d want to purchase one or the other (especially when we were all used to the numbering/naming schemes they had previously). Dell got the memo and is reintroducing some of their numbering schemes of before with their line-up of Core Ultra 3 Series laptops.
While the Optiplex, Latitude, and Precision monikers are still gone (XPS is coming back), they now have a few different Professional laptop options:
- Dell Pro 3: These are basically the replacement of the Latitude 3000, Vostro, and base Pro Series of laptops (and also the Dell Pro Essentials laptops of a separate renaming last year). We still don’t recommend the 3-series unless budget is the #1 priority as they’re not as durable, light, or as well built as the 5-series or 7-series and generally don’t come with as many expansion, upgrade, or configuration options.
- Dell Pro 5: These are going to be our go-to recommendation as a replacement for the previous Latitude 5000 series and Dell Pro Plus series of last year. The Pro Plus is what we recommended and have generally to our clients.
- Dell Pro 7: If you need something thinner and lighter, the Pro 7 line-up is what you need. You may sacrifice future upgradable RAM and you might lose some expansion and connectivity ports, but you’ll get a lighter and thinner machine.
