Microsoft has introduced Microsoft 365 E7, a new all-in-one license offering designed to meet the evolving needs of today’s modern enterprises. Microsoft 365 E7 is a new consolidated license intended for large organizations that want broader AI, security, and collaboration capabilities within a single plan. It builds on the functionality available in Microsoft 365 E5 (you can see E5’s entire feature set at the very useful M365Maps.com) and adds a few more features that you had to previously purchase separately. So what is included?
The license includes expanded security measures beyond E5’s baseline, including adaptive threat detection, more automated compliance tooling, and finer-grained access controls. It also introduces capabilities for faster incident analysis and response that rely on real-time threat signals and automation to help reduce investigation time. E7 emphasizes tighter integration of AI across core apps while adding additional security and management controls. E7 embeds Copilot AI features into familiar applications such as Word, Excel, and Teams to support tasks like content generation, contextual suggestions, and basic automation. These capabilities are presented as productivity aids that can reduce repetitive work and surface relevant information during authoring and meetings. Previously, you needed a separate Copilot license for this.
Compared with M365 E5, E7 focuses on deeper AI integration and additional security automation rather than only incremental feature additions. E5 remains a strong option for enterprise organizations prioritizing established security and compliance features and telephony capabilities such as Teams Phone. E7 adds real-time threat intelligence, AI-driven incident response, and enhanced meeting and workflow automation that may be relevant for organizations seeking more automation and AI-driven insights.
Long story short, M365 E7 is E5 plus Copilot and all its features, plus a few more security/AI features. If you’re buying all these services ala carte, this is the cheaper way of doing it at $99/user/month (if pre-paid for a year in advance – no word at this time if a month-to-month option will be available).
