For as long as we can remember working in IT, Dell’s business line-up of machines has always looked like this:
- Latitude: Dell’s business-class laptops.
- Optiplex: Dell’s business-class desktop machines.
- Precision: Dell’s workstation-class line-up of hardware (desktops and laptops).
- Inspiron and XPS: Generally, these were consumer machines that we’d occasionally see in commercial environments but were never built or warrantied for that purpose. Dell would apply commercial warranties to XPS machines, but only for 4 years while the machines above could have up to 5 years applied to them.
- Vostro: We don’t talk about Bruno Vostro as we don’t recommend or sell them.
Dell is introducing and rolling out some new laptops and desktop (and some docking stations, it seems). Part of that transition includes changing their naming conventions and removing all the above labels and going with this:
- Dell: This base line will include items formerly labeled Inspiron, XPS or Vostro.
- Dell Pro: This will replace the Latitude line of laptops and Optiplex desktops.
- Dell Pro Max: This will replace the Precision workstation line up of hardware.
Inside each of those lines will include Plus and Premium upgrades. So your next laptop could potentially be a Dell Pro Max Premium line.
Yes, we know it’s confusing – we’re still trying to wrap our head around it.
Looking at the specifications of the new machines, the Dell Pro Plus line of machines (both desktop and laptop) are rough equivalent to the machines we had previously been selling. Some of those new models are starting to roll out and are visible in Dell’s catalog, but most of them won’t start rolling out until later in Q2, according to the documentation they provided us.
All that being said, Dell still has plenty of Latitudes, Optiplex, and Precision hardware left in stock so we’re going to continue selling those until they run out.
