We mentioned a year ago that Microsoft was working on a new version of Outlook to unify its code base and feature set. It was a grand idea and makes sense long term for Microsoft to not have to maintain separate apps and code for every platform.
Recently, Microsoft made the “Outlook (new)” app (versus the legacy “Outlook (classic)” app) generally available and says that the app is good to go. But as Office Watch reports (and we agree), you should stick with the classic app for now as there is at least one major issue that Office Watch is reporting that would be a show-stopper for us: No Offline Support: There is no (or very little) local caching off your email data and the program will just not work without a solid Internet connection. One of the great things about the classic Outlook is that it was pretty quick to load emails because of that local cache. It also allowed you to read and reply to emails without internet connectivity (handy if you travel and like to write and respond to emails on a plane for example). Because of the forced connectivity and caching issues, the app will be mostly unusable without a good internet connection (since it has to download each message as you’re viewing it every time – which seems silly for something that never really changes once you’ve downloaded it).
So long story short: Hold off on the Outlook “New” app for a bit.
